Obama seeks $500m to equip Syria rebels
US president calls on Congress to approve policy that will "ramp up US support to the moderate Syrian opposition".
Barack Obama has called on the US Congress to approve $500m to train and equip vetted Syrian rebels, in what would be a significant escalation of US involvement in the conflict.
The White House on Thursday said it intended to "ramp up US support to the moderate Syrian opposition ... to help defend the Syrian people, stabilise areas under opposition control ... counter terrorist threats, and promote conditions for a negotiated settlement".
The funds would allow the US military to "train and equip appropriately vetted elements of the moderate Syrian armed opposition," said John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman.
The National Security Council's spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said the funding "would build on the administration's long-standing efforts to empower the moderate Syrian opposition".
Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, however said that the US plan was a step in the wrong direction. “I am sure that it is possible to spend it for something more useful,” he said.
EU signs pacts with ex-USSR states
Mr Poroshenko (C) said the pact was a "symbol of faith and unbreakable will"
Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova have signed partnership agreements with the European Union, in a move strongly opposed by Russia.
The pact - which would bind the three countries more closely to the West both economically and politically - is at the heart of the crisis in Ukraine.
Russia said that while the signing of the deal was the right of any state there could be grave consequences.
A ceasefire with pro-Russian rebels in east Ukraine is due to end on Friday.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko hailed the signing as Ukraine's most historic day since independence in 1991, describing it as a "symbol of faith and unbreakable will".
Mr Poroshenko also said he saw the signing as the start of preparations for joining the bloc.
"Ukraine is underlining its sovereign choice in favour of membership of the EU," he said.
Meanwhile European Council President Herman van Rompuy described it as a "great day for Europe".

Mexico drug lord arrested watching World Cup
Head of diminished Tijuana-based drug cartel Fernando Sanchez Arellano, also known as "The Engineer", arrested.
The head of the once-mighty Tijuana-based Arellano Felix drug cartel was arrested while watching Mexico's football team play in the World Cup, a top Mexican federal official has said.
Federal police chief Monte Alejandro Rubido said Fernando Sanchez Arellano was arrested in the border city of Tijuana on Monday and was expected to be brought to Mexico City sometime on Tuesday.
Sanchez Arellano had $100,000 in cash when he was arrested, Rubido said at a news briefing.
Journalists were shown photographs of Sanchez Arellano in a green football jersey and with his cheeks painted with green, white and red, the colours of the Mexican flag.
Sanchez Arellano inherited leadership of the Arellano Felix cartel from his uncle, Javier Arellano Felix, who was arrested by the US Coast Guard in international waters off Mexico's Baja California in 2006. The uncle later was sentenced in San Diego to 40 years in federal prison.
New missing Malaysian plane MH370 search area announced
The new underwater search will initially focus on the orange area indicated
A new search area for the missing Malaysian plane has been announced by the Australian government after further analysis of satellite data.
The search will now shift south to focus on an area 1,800km (1,100 miles) off the west coast of Australia, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss confirmed.
Flight MH370 vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March with 239 passengers on board.
Officials said they believed the plane had been on autopilot when it crashed.
A 64-page report released by the Australian government concluded that the underwater search for the plane should resume in the new 60,000 sq km area.
An extensive search of the ocean floor was conducted in April after several acoustic pings, initially thought to be from the plane's flight data recorders, were heard. However, officials now believe the pings were not caused by the plane.
