Obama seeks $500m to equip Syria rebels

US president calls on Congress to approve policy that will "ramp up US support to the moderate Syrian opposition".
Barack Obama has called on the US Congress to approve $500m to train and equip vetted Syrian rebels, in what would be a significant escalation of US involvement in the conflict.

The White House on Thursday said it intended to "ramp up US support to the moderate Syrian opposition ... to help defend the Syrian people, stabilise areas under opposition control ... counter terrorist threats, and promote conditions for a negotiated settlement".

The funds would allow the US military to "train and equip appropriately vetted elements of the moderate Syrian armed opposition," said John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman.
The National Security Council's spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said the funding "would build on the administration's long-standing efforts to empower the moderate Syrian opposition".

Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, however said that the US plan was a step in the wrong direction. “I am sure that it is possible to spend it for something more useful,” he said.

EU signs pacts with ex-USSR states

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and European Council President Herman van Rompuy - 27 June
Mr Poroshenko (C) said the pact was a "symbol of faith and unbreakable will"
Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova have signed partnership agreements with the European Union, in a move strongly opposed by Russia.

The pact - which would bind the three countries more closely to the West both economically and politically - is at the heart of the crisis in Ukraine.

Russia said that while the signing of the deal was the right of any state there could be grave consequences.

A ceasefire with pro-Russian rebels in east Ukraine is due to end on Friday.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko hailed the signing as Ukraine's most historic day since independence in 1991, describing it as a "symbol of faith and unbreakable will".

Mr Poroshenko also said he saw the signing as the start of preparations for joining the bloc.

"Ukraine is underlining its sovereign choice in favour of membership of the EU," he said.

Meanwhile European Council President Herman van Rompuy described it as a "great day for Europe".

Mexico drug lord arrested watching World Cup

Head of diminished Tijuana-based drug cartel Fernando Sanchez Arellano, also known as "The Engineer", arrested.
The head of the once-mighty Tijuana-based Arellano Felix drug cartel was arrested while watching Mexico's football team play in the World Cup, a top Mexican federal official has said.

Federal police chief Monte Alejandro Rubido said Fernando Sanchez Arellano was arrested in the border city of Tijuana on Monday and was expected to be brought to Mexico City sometime on Tuesday.

Sanchez Arellano had $100,000 in cash when he was arrested, Rubido said at a news briefing.

Journalists were shown photographs of Sanchez Arellano in a green football jersey and with his cheeks painted with green, white and red, the colours of the Mexican flag.

Sanchez Arellano inherited leadership of the Arellano Felix cartel from his uncle, Javier Arellano Felix, who was arrested by the US Coast Guard in international waters off Mexico's Baja California in 2006. The uncle later was sentenced in San Diego to 40 years in federal prison.

New missing Malaysian plane MH370 search area announced

Map showing new underwater search area
The new underwater search will initially focus on the orange area indicated

A new search area for the missing Malaysian plane has been announced by the Australian government after further analysis of satellite data.

The search will now shift south to focus on an area 1,800km (1,100 miles) off the west coast of Australia, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss confirmed.

Flight MH370 vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March with 239 passengers on board.

Officials said they believed the plane had been on autopilot when it crashed.

A 64-page report released by the Australian government concluded that the underwater search for the plane should resume in the new 60,000 sq km area.

An extensive search of the ocean floor was conducted in April after several acoustic pings, initially thought to be from the plane's flight data recorders, were heard. However, officials now believe the pings were not caused by the plane.

China executes 13 people for "terrorist" attacks in Xinjiang

The trial of three people sentenced to death for their roles in an October attack on the edge of Beijing's Tiananmen Square is seen in this still image taken from video in Urumqi city, June 16, 2014. REUTERS/CCTV/via Reuters TV

"The 13 criminals had planned violent terrorist attacks and ruthlessly killed police officers, government officials and civilians, which took innocent lives, caused huge property losses and seriously endangered public security," the official news agency Xinhua said.

Xinjiang is the traditional home of Muslim Uighurs who speak a Turkic language, and China has blamed previous attacks on Islamist separatists it says seek to establish an independent state there called East Turkestan.

Exiled Uighur groups and human rights activists say the government's own repressive policies in Xinjiang have provoked unrest, something Beijing denies.

The 13 executed men were involved in attacks in different parts of Xinjiang, including one last June that killed 24 policemen and local residents, Xinhua said.

Russia cuts gas supply to Ukraine

Russia cut off gas supplies to Ukraine on Monday as a payment deadline passed and negotiators failed to reach a deal with Russia on gas prices and unpaid bills.

Gazprom's spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov said that since Ukraine had paid nothing for the gas by Monday Moscow has no legal grounds to supply it to Ukraine any more.

Kupriyanov added, however, that the supply to Europe is going as planned and Ukraine has the obligations to make sure the gas will reach European customers.

Russian wanted payment of $1.95 billion for past due bills by 9 a.m. Kiev time Monday. As the deadline passed Gazprom issued a statement that it would start demanding payment in advance for gas.

The European Commission said in a statement Monday that Ukraine was ready to accept a compromise in talks in Kiev of paying $1 billion now and more later, but Russia was not.

European Union energy official Guenther Oettinger said he was "not pessimistic" that agreement could eventually be reached.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich told Russia news agencies on Monday that the decision on what to do next in relation to Ukraine will be taken following a meeting between Gazprom's CEO Alexei Miller and President Vladimir Putin.

Rebels shoot down Ukrainian military plane, 49 killed

An Ukrainian Il-76 aircraft flanked by two Su-27s during a military parade - 24 August 2008
Pro-Russian separatists shot down a Ukrainian army transport plane with an anti-aircraft missile as it came in to land early on Saturday in the eastern city of Luhansk, killing all 49 military personnel on board.

The toll is the highest suffered by government forces in a single incident since they launched a military operation to halt the rebellion in east Ukraine against the country's pro-European leaders in Kiev and to try to prevent the country splitting up.

The Defence Ministry said in a statement the Il-76 plane was shot down in a "cynical" attack by rebels using an anti-aircraft weapon and a heavy-caliber machine gun.

It gave no death toll but Vladislav Seleznyov, spokesman for the military operation in east Ukraine, said by phone: "Forty-nine people were killed. All were Ukrainian military personnel."

The Prosecutor General's office said nine crew and 40 paratroopers had been killed and that the plane was hit by an anti-aircraft missile at 1:10 a.m. (2210 GMT on Friday).

VA audit finds thousands of U.S. veterans waiting for health care

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said on Monday that around 100,000 veterans are experiencing long waits for health care appointments at VA facilities, with more than half of these waiting 90 days or more.
In results of an internal audit ordered as the scandal over deadly VA wait times exploded last month, the agency said it found that schedule misreporting was widespread. Of the 731 facilities surveyed, it found that 76 percent experienced wait time reporting problems.
In the May 12 to June 3 survey, the VA said it found that 57,436 new veteran patients had been waiting 90 days or more for an appointment. And it found that 63,869 patients over the past 10 years had requested appointments that have never been scheduled.
The agency said it was abandoning a two-week scheduling goal for appointments after finding it was "not attainable."
"This data shows the extent of the systemic problems we face, problems that demand immediate actions," VA acting Secretary Sloan Gibson said in a statement.
The report made no mention of whether the long wait times had resulted in deaths of veterans. Doctors at VA clinics in Phoenix, where the investigations were first launched, have alleged that some 40 veterans have died while waiting for care.

Here Comes The Saudi Dynasty Succession Crisis ...

Here Comes The Saudi Dynasty Succession Crisis ...
Saudi royal guards stand on duty during the Janadriya culture festival at Der'iya in Riyadh

The Saudi dynasty is facing its biggest dynastic challenge in 50 years, and Game of Thrones-style cracks are showing in the imminent transition  from King Abdullah’s rule.

Liz Sly of The Washington Post details  growing discontent in the royal family after the contentious appointment of the  king’s youngest brother, Muqrin, as the deputy heir.

The choice of Muqrin, a British-educated fighter pilot who has close ties to the U.S., is controversial partly because he is the  son of a Yemeni concubine who was never formally married to his father, King Abdulaziz Al-Saud,  who founded the Saudi state  in 1932.

“He is not a real prince; his mother was a slave and there are other brothers who are more competent,” a former Saudi official told Sly. “Nobody believes Muqrin can become king.”

Chinese farmer turns suitcases into ingenious electric scooter

From the “This is a real thing, we think” file comes the curious case of the Chinese farmer turned inventor of motorized suitcases.

He Liang, a farmer from China’s Hunan region, has invented and patented the ultimate rollaboard, or what he apparently calls the “multi-functional suitcase.” Photographed this week in Changsha, the motorized suitcase is said to weigh about 15-16 lbs. and is able to carry two people (or one well-fed American, maybe). With the help of a wheel hub electric motor in the single front wheel, the little three-wheeler can travel 50 to 60 kilometers—or 31 to 37 miles—on a full charge.

Maximum speed is 20 km per hour, which is somewhat faster than we would ever feel comfortable traveling on a three-wheeled box, and about as fast as a fleet-footed TSA agent could give chase in an airport concourse until he runs out of breath, or the rider runs into a stunned tourist who swears he just saw some loser coming toward him riding a suitcase.
